One
of the best parts about travel is exploring local cuisine. From spicy kimchi to
savory barbecue, kalgusku wonton soup to octopus, Korea’s cuisine is
characterized by a balance of fiery, sweet and savory flavors and the use of
fresh seafood. For an authentic dining experience, look for restaurants packed
with locals and don't be afraid to taste the wares at street stalls. For the
freshest fish, visit Seoul’s Noryangjin Fisheries Wholesale Market. This 24-hour
market encompasses several acres and sells everything seafood, from halibut to
sting ray. Take your purchases to one of the market’s many restaurants, where
they will create a meal of sashimi or soup.
Experience a blend of past and present at the Design
Museum Café. This Seoul institution is home to an artfully arranged
combination of historical artifacts and modern art with a focus on
furnishings and architectural objects, all set in a sleek, urban space. Also
in Seoul, the National Museum of Contemporary Art houses three floors of
paintings, photography, sculptures and installations by Korea’s best modern
artists, including a pagoda constructed from 1,000 televisions. Explore
South Korea’s religious traditions by hiking to the Seokbulsa Temple in
Busan. Carved into rock on a mountainside, the temple is full of Buddhist
etchings. Learn more about Buddhism at the Ahnkook Zen Centre in Seoul. This
religious center teaches Buddhism classes in English on the weekends.
For a glimpse into Korean history, take an 90-minute, escorted tour of
Changdeokgung. Built in 1405, this Seoul palace housed the royal family
until the 1900s and is surrounded by terraced gardens, stone bridges and
well-preserved historic buildings. Also in Seoul, the Namsangol Hanok
Village is a complex of preserved furnished yangban -- stone, tile and wood
houses -- from the 1400s. Visit on the weekend to see reenactments of
everyday life in the Joseon era.
Spend a day outdoors exploring Seoul’s Grand Park. Bring your hiking shoes,
because this huge zoo park sprawls through wooded hillsides. See dolphins,
seals, birds and insects, as well as an indoor botanical garden. For scenic
views, climb to the top of the Busan Tower. Set in Busan’s Yongdusan Park,
this 600-foot-tall structure offers spectacular ocean views.
