The ASVAB and your Future
How can I use my
ASVAB results to explore careers?
You can use
your ASVAB results with Exploring Careers: The ASVAB Workbook. Every
student who takes the ASVAB should receive a copy of the Workbook.
The Workbook has a series of activities that will enable you to match
your interests, abilities and personal preferences to over 200 civilian and
military occupations. You can also use your ASVAB results with Military
Careers, a career information resource, to determine your chances of
qualifying for different military occupations.
Should I take the ASVAB if I plan to go to college?
Yes. ASVAB results provide you with information that can help you
determine your capacity for advanced academic education. You can also use
your ASVAB results, along with other personal information, to identify areas
for career exploration.
How long can I use my ASVAB test results for entrance into one of the
military services?
If you are a junior, a senior or a postsecondary school student, you can
use your ASVAB scores for up to two years for military enlistment. However,
if you are a sophomore, you can't use your ASVABscores for enlistment. In
order to use your scores for enlistment in the military service, you would
need to take the ASVAB in your junior or senior year or when you apply for
military service. The military services encourage all young people to finish
high school before joining the Armed Forces. Check out our training
section for more information on Basic Training.
Should I take the ASVAB if I plan on becoming a commissioned officer?
Yes, it can be helpful. Although the ASVAB is not required for entrance
into most officer training programs, taking the ASVAB is a valuable
experience for any student who aspires to become a military officer. The
aptitude information you receive could assist you in career planning.
Should I take the ASVAB if I am considering entering the Reserve or
National Guard?
Yes. These military organizations also use the ASVAB for enlistment
purposes.
What should I do if a recruiter calls me?
A recruiter is one of the best sources of information about the many
opportunities available through the military services. The military services
want all young people to know about the numerous benefits available,
including competitive starting salaries, rewarding jobs, outstanding
technical training and a variety of education opportunities. You are, of
course, under no obligation to the military as a result of taking the ASVAB.
Is there any relationship between taking the ASVAB and Selective
Service registration?
There is no relationship between taking the ASVAB and Selective Service
registration. ASVAB information is not available to the Selective Service
System.
