Guide to Military Careers

Joining the Military

ASVAB - the Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery

Why take the ASVAB?
If you are interested in the joining the Armed Forces, there are three basic reasons to take the ASVAB:

1. To Find out if you qualify for a specific U.S. military service branch.

2. To find out what job or specialty you may qualify for within that U.S. military service branch.

3. To explore what your interests are in careers outside of the military.

To qualify for the military, you must first take the ASVAB. After you have completed the test, you will receive a score that is referred to as the AFQT (Armed Forces Qualification Test). The AFQT is a score of 1 to 99 that is made up of four of the subtests: paragraph compression, word knowledge, math knowledge and arithmetic reasoning. Your raw scores are run through a formula to determine your AFQT score.

The U.S. military breaks these scores down into several categories. The primary categories that military recruiters are concerned with are: Category IIIA and above (50 to 99); IIIB (31-49), and IV and below (0 to 30)

ASVAB testThe U.S. Congress mandates how many of each category are eligible to join the military. The Department of Defense is mainly looking for Category IIIA, which means that your AFQT score is 50 or above.  Those that fall under this group have scored the highest on the ASVAB.  As a Category IIIA, you will qualify for education money and/or bonuses that may be available. Check with each branch of service for exact details. Don’t stress out about trying to score a 99. Most people will qualify for any job that is open with a score below 99.

The subtest scores are used individually or in combination to find out what specific job or military specialty within the branch of service you may qualify for.  Remember that not all jobs in the military are combat related. There are scores of challenging, very rewarding, combat support jobs in the military.  You could qualify for technical or highly specialized training in non-combat fields such as aircraft maintenance, radar technician, computer networking, sonar operator, and more! The ASVAB is also used to help you explore careers in the private sector, if you choose to not join the military.

The ASVAB Career Exploration Program includes eight individual tests covering verbal and math skills, mechanical knowledge, electronics, and several other areas. It also produces three Career Exploration Scores for Verbal Skills, Math Skills, and Science and Technical Skills. These three scores serve as one of several pieces of information about your child that can aid in the exploration of a wide variety of career options. The ASVAB is offered at no cost and no obligation to high school students.

For many young adults, the prospect of embarking on a career, at times, can be daunting. While many high school students are confident about their futures and their career choices, many others may need help and support as they make these important life transitions. Since students probably are aware of the current realities of the world of work, they may question what the future holds for them. We have endeavored to produce career exploration and planning materials that are future-oriented and empowering to all students. We have emphasized the importance of planning and decision making, believing these skills will serve students not only in realizing their post-high school goals and subsequent career transitions, but also in other areas of their lives.

It's your future. Get the most out of it.
