Combat
Leader's Field Guide
The power this guide offers to those of us in uniform is a summary of a
whole lot of infantry know-how. If you are a new lieutenant or recently
promoted corporal or sergeant --this is your new fieldcraft and
small-unit-leader tactical guide. If you are returning to a line unit
from recruiter or drill sergeant duty, this will assist your smooth
transition back into the woods. If you are a company commander, there is
a good possibility that the seasoned first shirt that revised this
premiere Stackpole guide--can teach you a thing or two. If you are
a non-infantry military member or a civilian with an interest, this
guide will cover the basics of fighting as a small infantry unit.
Combat Leader's Field Guide is a great compact reference on platoon and
squad level operations. It basicly summarizes information contained in
US Army field manuals FM 7-8 and FM 21-75. This book achieves it's
stated goal of being a pocket reference that you can take to the field
with you to jog your memory. It fits in a BDU pocket, though the top end
does stick out. National Guard and Reserve personel will probably find
it useful though most active duty combat arms personel should know this
stuff by heart already.
US
Army Leadership Field Manual
This book is very cheap. Just about the cheapest leadership book you can
buy. But its valuable knowledge far exceeds its price. There is a reason
why this book is used for mandatory leadership curriculum at West Point
and virtually all military leadership training schools. It teaches
soldier to 1)Be of strong ethical and moral character (loyalty,
integrity, discipline) 2)Know valuable skills and knowledge (technical
and personal) 3)Do utilize the leadership skills to make a difference.
I wish this book was thicker with even more useful information. The book
could have expounded far more in detail, especially things related to
interpersonal skills (communication and motivation). I know there is a
wealth of psychological research on the subject of leadership which the
book could have used for further enlightenment. But the book limits its
focus only on its history and military leaders as a source.
Leadership is a deep and complex subject because it requires one to
deeply understand oneself and the others. This book provides a solid
basis.
Be
*Know* Do - Leadership the Army Way
Leadership often is assigned a mystical quality, as if people either
possess the spark that makes others follow them, or they don't. Well,
now you can lead without the innate spark. In fact, the U.S. Army sets
out to prove that anyone can become a leader, as this engaging book from
the Leader to Leader Institute explains. Using The Army Leadership
Manual (abstract available from get abstract) as its foundation, this
volume demystifies leadership. Promisingly enough, this speedy read
persuasively argues that being a leader requires little more than
honesty and competence. Throw in an ability to communicate and a
willingness to listen to your people, and you could become the next
Patton, or at least a respected officer. This enlightening tome is a
little thin on ways to turn its leadership development philosophy into
action. Still, we recommend it to managers and to those who strive to
become leaders.
This is definitely a cut above most management and leadership books. It
is remarkably clear, useful and jargon-free. The authors, accomplished
leaders in their own right, are not trying to sell a pet program. They
take a framework from the world's foremost leadership development
organization -- the US Army -- and bring it life with real insight and
practical advice. A great tool for anyone who wants to "be, know or do"
more in their work and lives.

The Soldier's Comprehensive Study Manual
This book has definitely found a "niche" in the world of the Army
Soldier and is considered by many an indispensable tool for personal and
professional development. Few people know the "Board Scene" better than
the author who, as a junior enlisted soldier and later as a
noncommissioned officer in the U.S. Army, made countless board
appearances. In addition to receiving the maximum possible score of 200
points on both his E-5 and E-6 promotion boards, he received top
finishes on numerous Soldier/NCO of the Month, Quarter, and Year Boards
and was selected as the Third Infantry Division's NCO of the Year.
Additionally, he was inducted into the highly prestigious Sergeant
Morales Club - the pinnacle of NCO achievement. He has since departed
active duty and dedicates his life to maintaining the most accurate and
up-to-date resource of its kind available.
This is a comprehensive study manual designed to prepare U.S. Army
Soldiers for promotion boards, Soldier of the Month/Quarter/Year Boards,
and the prestigious Sergeant Morales and Audie Murphy Leadership Boards.
This is a MUST-HAVE book for any soldier interested in professional
development and personal advancement or achievement in today's
increasingly sophisticated Army!

NCO Guide
The seventh edition of this perennial best-seller has finally hit the
streets! (OK,it finally hit the "river" since it's only available at
Amazon.com right now.)
Very much up-to-date, the revisions to the 1999 edition of the NCO's
bible provide Army noncoms with a made-to-order reference for just about
any situation they may come across in today's modern army. The author,
CSM (Retired) Robert S. Rush, has taken this guide to new heights. There
are revised sections in the guide on caring leadership, training, NCO
career development and promotions, awards and decorations, and "customs
and courtesies." Army policy concerning the new fraternization
rules-of-engagement is included and the latest military Web site info
pertinent to NCOs is included as appendix.
The benefits of owning this book are enormous. Tuck it in your BDU
trouser pocket before you deploy and you will have a modern day
reference containing individual treatises on one of the broadest
compilations of NCO subject matter ever made available in print. A
must-have guide.
The
Three Meter Zone - NCO Leadership
Welcome to The Three Meter Zone, the zone where first-line leaders
accomplish an organization's most vital work. The critical leadership in
any organization is that provided by first-line leaders. In the military
that responsibility falls to Noncommissioned Officers, the group of men
and women considered the Backbone of the force. Daily, they train and
mold soldiers through expert action and by professional example. Without
rock-solid leaders in the Three Meter Zone, the strategic mission fails.
The Three Meter Zone challenges you to assess your leadership abilities
and provide the crucial leadership your organization needs.
The best way to understand the impact first-line leadership has on
organizations and what it entails is to thoroughly study it where it
occurs. In the Three Meter Zone
